WSDPT was started in 1986 by Marika Molnar. It was a natural progression for her to open a practice specifically for professional dancers as she had been the first physical therapist hired to work on-site at a major professional ballet company. In 1980 she became the company physical therapist to the New York City Ballet, then under the direction of George Balanchine. Now the staff of WSDPT, as a team, provides physical therapy services to the NYCB and the School of the American Ballet( SAB). Through the years, the practice has expanded so that we are now able to accommodate non-dancers as well.
We pride ourselves on a well-trained staff, many with specialist certificates, who are continually expanding their knowledge and skill base through continuing education and teaching. The physical therapists at WSDPT are not only active in teaching our own “Dance Medicine Practicum” series, but frequently teach at various ballet schools, dance companies and conferences.
